Getting Parakeets to eat fruits and veggies?

I've wanted to feed them carrots or something healthy for their well being and it makes me sad that they don't want to. Right now they've been eating just seeds, and yes I know that's not too good. One of them is about 5 years old the other maybe 1. They aren't hand trained but aren't scared of me. Still they wouldn't take anything from my hand. And I have tried the eating in front of them thing but they really don't care. Any suggestions or other types of food I could give them? Thanks.

Actually seed is very good for parakeets because they are part of the grass parakeet type. They eat a great deal of seed in the wild.

Still, you are a very involved bird owner to want them to have a better variety.

Get a separate bowl from their seed and put it next to their seed bowl. Fill it daily with 1 TBS of corn. Corn will probably be what they try first in my experience. Once they start nibbling and tossing the corn on the floor, you can introduce another veggie like carrots or peas.

You can also get bamboo skewers and stick fruit bits (rasberries were always a huge hit with my budgies) and thread the sticks through the cage bars.

Always take the veggies/fruits out at the end of the day. They will spoil otherwise and could make your fids ill.

Another way is to put in the seed and then put some veggies on top of the seed. They at least have to move the veggies that way.

Another hit with my budgies was brocoli slaw. They sell it at the grocery stores here.

Foxygold's answer of just keep trying is actually very right. You have to do this every day until they decide to try it.
You should contact either a vet or a pet store they would probably be able to help you or you could search for answers too. I would probably cut it up so small and get them use to the different types of fruits and veggies maybe even like put little shavings of the food in it. If all else fails try a different kind of food...maybe they
don't like the stuff you have tried but make sure its safe first. go to something like Parakeets.com and just try. Good luck.
Keep trying, they will get bored one day and try it.
first give it a small bowl of cherios for 2hrs. next take his or her seed out and just give it a mini carrot in a small bowl do this for 3 hours every day and praise is when ever it takes a nibble do this every day for a month. also try feeding it cherios from your hand.
no because i have parekets and i sometimes feed it lettus or a plain cracker thats it that i tryed and my parekets did not die of it!

good luck!
put freeze dried crumplets of food into their food dish. use mangoes, strawberries, and bananas to put in their dish. if its mixed with some seeds, they wont notice the difference.
You would want to keep trying. Alot of birds will reject food at first. You have to keep trying. Its VERY good that you eat infront of them. Make sure they have a cuttle bone, that will give them nutrition. Also crush some up and put it in there seed. Hope this helps.
I used to have three parakeets, and they would go NUTS over celery! Try to remove the strings.
i have 5, and they all go crazy over lettuce, and celery leaves.
i would alway give my keets the broccoli stems and the dark out leaves of romain lettuce. they loved it!. but only the dark outer leaves, which are low in moisture. (no parsley) .. i would also add a cuttle bone to the cage, they love it, and need it . a high quality seed is fine, but get one with out sunflower seeds. save sunflower seeds for only a treat, as they are high in fat
