Found a baby pigeon. Feeding it Exact 4-5 times daily. Best guess it is 4 - 5 weeks old. When do I wean ?

When do I wean %26 what do I feed it? I got him on Sunday 5-6-07. He preanes himself. Bites at his feet. Stretches out his wings, is very active. The top of his head has skin that is pulled to one side, our neighbor who is a nurse is looking at it to see when it can be cut off. I am keeping it clean %26 putting neosporin on it. Any info would be greatly appreciated.
Answers:
leave it - - they carry infections - they are flying rats..

take it to the vets
most birds aren't weaned until they are 3 months old. start slowly, and if bird seems to be having trouble eating soft foods on its own continue feedings. every bird is different.
That is wonderful that you want to help this bird.

Please take him to someone who knows birds in your area, so that he can get proper attention. Birds mask their symptoms most often.

You can go to the bulletin board I have linked below to find out information on how to care for your bird or where you can take it to get help.

Again you are a wonderful person to have taken the time and effort to help this bird.
i agree with the last answer, pigeons are filthy birds tht carry all sorts of disieses , most of which passed through the droppings,
A baby pigeon will be able to pick up food for himself like a chicken when he is ready to wean. He will eat by himself soon after being able to fly. Ask a wildlife rehabber to maybe help. This would probably be about 4-6 weeks.

To the person or persons that believe pigeon carry disease please tell us all what disease this can be? A pigeon is a bird not a rodent. A pigeon can not give any sickness to any human unless you eat a sick bird. Please note that anyone who got sick from avian flu actually ate dead or dying chickens infected with avian flu. Salmonella is from eating contaminated eggs, once again not from the bird.

Rats are rodents and do carry disease. - bubonic plague, actually the fleas on the rat not the rat itself.
I raised one once and fed it with a syringe (Slowly tho, the bird can easily drown in this way). I don't know what you are feeding it but I raised one from the age of about two weeks on Avi-plus handrearing formula for parrots, yes parrots!

She did extremely welll on ot and is a very healthy bird. Start offering canary seed and crushed chichen feed in two stable, shallow bowls straight away. Always feel the crop before feeding, if it is half full or a bit less, reduce the food you feed. put a little less food in the syringe as the bird eats more of the seed or chicken feed. over a 2-3 week period, the bird should be weened off handrearing formula. At first the bird will only play with the seed, dont mistake this for eating it! always feel the crop before reducing formula.

If the bird won't accept food, GENTLY open the mouth and place some formula inside with your finger. If the bird swallows it, try taking a straw and cut it so its like a small spoon. be patient... it'll take long for it to understand what you are trying to do. Once Its accepted the food, every time you come shell flap her wing and 'squeek' for food.

The skin on the top of the head it something ive never heard of so can't help you with that one... sorry... Good luck and hope you find the info you need
(I Highly recommend that Avi-plus!)

Hope this helps...

I use a technique called abundance weaning. Which, simply put, means that I let the bird tell me when it's ready to wean. Once the bird is feathered, I make sure that there is always a supply of seed and other foods available for the bird to pick at between feedings. Gradually it will eat enough that it will refuse to take hand feedings. It sounds like you've done a good job so far with your pigeon. They are not dirty filthy or flying rats. They are living breathing beings that deserve our care and compassion just as much as any other creature.
If it has skin on the top of its head, are sure it is not a chicken?
Please go to this website

and ask your question. They can tell you what and when to feed, how to medicate, what resources are in your area, etc. I found a baby two weeks ago and couldn't have saved it without these guys.
Hi when the bird is ready to feed himself you will notice that it will start to pick .. a pigeon usualy gets fed untill its fully feathered so if you dont mind looking after it keep up the good work..pity there wernt more people like you..Regards Steve
