You could try to see if you could meet a bird breeder and see if they will show you a baby bird, so you can see how helpless they are. Don't be afraid to touch it and then you will see how soft they are. Then just try holding the baby bird, it wont bite you. We have gone to schools for 20 years teaching kids and other people how not to be afraid of birds.

There is nothing to fear from them, just learn to understand what they are about and how funny some of their personalities can be. Try getting a baby parakeet, one that was hand fed and handled by the breeder so it wont be afraid of you and you will learn not to be afraid of it.

become more familiar with anything you are scared of.
well it may help but i suggest you get a small one to start out .They are good pets and fun to watch and care for but a large bird is more difficult. I love parrots and have been around them but they are scary if you dont know much about them.Get a small quaker parrot or a canary or finch and get a book on them too. I think you will feel better and find them interesting and fun. GOOD LUCK.
Get a canary. They aren't vicious :P and are pretty quiet as far as i know.
Fear like that is not rational however we still have them. I myself am afraid of clowns. Yes, I said clowns. I would never consider having a clown move in with me to overcome my fear. First of all I would never sleep at night and the clown would not live long as I would either beat it to death in a panic or let it starve because I would be afraid to feed it. Don't get a bird. Go to the zoo and check them out while they are in cages and can't peck your eyes out.
If you must get a bird get a couple of finches. They do not require the kind of attention and interaction that companion birds (parakeets and up) need.
Better yet get a little therapy
If your getting a bird, I'd say a dove. They'll never bite you, you could train them (just to sit on your hand), they're hardy, and their coo is so delightful. The only thing is, is that if your getting a dove, it should be with another dove.
-Good Luck =)
birds freak me out too! don't get one, what is your bf, some kind of behavioral psychologist? he doesn't know how it is to be terrified by birds, don't listen to him
I don't know if you should get a bird, they require love and attention. Maybe you should try going to the pet store and visit the bird section instead of buying one. You can go to the pet store as many times as you would like to conquer your avian fear. Try Petco or Pet Smart if your're near one.
i think getting a bird to get over your fear is a bad idea. what if it doesn't help, and the poor bird is all alone and not well taken care of?

plus, you need to feel safe in your own home. it's supposed to be a place where you feel comfortable and can relax. you won't be able to do that with something you fear in the house.

birds are very intelligent animals with a lot of needs to stay healthy and sane. they are a big responsibility and require a lot of knowledge. it's not fair to the bird that you get it only to get over your fear. it won't be good for either of you.

if you want to get over your fear why not see a therapist or psychologist?
Bringing any pet home to love and take care of, needs to be done out of desire for that pet. Do not get a bird until you know you can love it. Being afraid of something is not something to laugh about. To conquer your fear will not be easy and should be done in a way that will work. You do not want to jump into something that will make you fear it more. I know of others that fear birds. They are not afraid of the beak as much as they are the wings flapping around. The people who know birds, know that the beak is the only real fear. Their wings could clip you in the eye and that could hurt, their nails could be sharp and dig into your skin, but the damages from these are usually minimum unless we are talking about a bird of prey.
What I would do, has been suggested already. I would find a local breeder and go visit some babies. Start off with the babies that do not have feathers on their wings and cannot fly. Most breeders love showing off their babies unless it will complicate things. If you spend some time with the baby and watch it grow and handle it from very young, you will see how precious they really can be. By the time the wings are fully feathered and before their first flight, you may be use to them enough that if they did fly off, you would be more concerened for their safety than yourself. If you are still afraid after that, maybe do it a few more times until you are not.
I do not think a smaller bird type would make a difference in your fear. Small birds can bite as well and they are sometimes harder to catch when flying around, which may freak you out more if you are standing nearby.
