How can you tell when a baby chick is a male or female?

Answers:
Check the feathers on the wings. If the chicks are broilers (i.e.-the common white chicken used for food), they might be feather sexable. Hold the chick in one hand %26 gently spread out the feathers on the wing %26 look at the feathers at the end of the wing. There are 2 rows of feathers here.

Males: the 2 rows will be even (majority of the time) or the top row will be longer (happens, but not often %26 difference btw rows usually is not large)

Females: the lower row will be noticably longer than the top row.

Google "feather sexing chickens" for a picture--it'll probably make more sense.

You should get about 50/50, so if you get 100% one or the other, chances are you can't feather sex the birds (it's a genetic trait, not all birds are breed for it). Also, this will work best at hatch-it'll be more difficult as the birds age.
You have to check their wings within 24 hours of being hatched. After that, you have to wait until they are older. You can tell roosters when display aggression towards each other before their tail feathers and combs grow out.
It depends on the species. Most of the time, secondary sex-traits don't emerge till at least the first molt, if not second.
