How can you tell if your bird ispregnant?

Answers:
Like if it has bumps on it's bottom of the tummy or if it can't stand on it's perch for bit, then.. its probably pregnant
Birds can't get pregnant. They lay eggs. If its laid an egg the egg must be fertilized by a male, if not the egg will rot.
Well, I am an expert when it comes to animals or animal related problems or questions because my mom is a vet-tech and my grandpa knows so much about animals every question I ask him he answers it. So the answer to your question would be,to feel the underside of the bird, and you'll feel like a hard lump there but it depends on the amount of time you think it has been pregnant with teh eggs and don't listen to anybody else because like I said I am an expert on animals.
Birds do not get "pregnant". Unlike mammals who birth live babies, birds lay eggs. If they are fertilized by a male and cared for by the female, they can hatch. If no male is present with the hen, you simply toss the eggs. This does not include chicken eggs.
it lays an egg
Actually right before a bird lays an egg, you can see a pooch under her tail.

How can you tell if a cockatiel egg is fertial?

bought my cockatiel from pet store she had a mate they sold her
mate. i don't know if the will hatch. how long when they mate does it take for her to lay eggs
Answers:
usually 2-3 days if she lays an egg. You probably do not want to be raising a chick if it is your first bird. Plus, with only one parent, it is very hard on the moether. If she lays an egg, just shake it up right after she lays it- you do not want to remove them or she will keep laying more, but shaking it will cause the embryo (if fertile) not to grow, and will do nothing if infertile (at this point it is only a couple cells- nothing more than you would get from a fertilized egg that you crack open and eat).
a week or so you can tell if the egg is good by holding up to the sun if its live you should see some dark blood like stuff also if the egg is cold is cactus. hope i helped
It is difficult to say. Mating does not guarantee fertility. Also, how old is the cockatiel? If it isn't mature she isn't going to lay an egg at all. Sometimes even mature tiels don't lay.

You can tell if there is an embryo by "candling" the egg. Holding it up to bright light to see if there is anything in it.

There are also machines you can buy that tell if your egg has a heart beat called a "Buddy". This will probably be the best thing to tell if it is fertile and alive.

How can you tell if a baby duck is alive in a egg?

It was found in a fairly cold pond and it had one big crack on the shell.
Answers:
Sorry, but the cold from the pond would have killed the embryo, as would the crack in the shell. You'll have to throw it away.
its done , throw it away ..
A pond, or a website?
The egg is cracked so regretfully, it is more than likely, dead if it were fertile.

There is no real way that I know of to tell if a duck egg is fertile or not- at least not with the naked eye. I certainly wouldn't save it to eat. So you know, it can take about 36 days to hatch and that's a slow one. Most about 32-33 days. But that isn't going to happen unless you have the apppropriate setting (incubator and such).

You really should never take an egg from the wild. If the mother hen (duck) would have come back what a horror to find your baby gone uh?

I know you may have had the best of intentions on taking the egg from the wild but just remember. It takes a lot of time, training, money and equipment to raise ducks so why try to do what mother nature does best? You'd never out do her. Not being bossy. I'm just sayin...

If you want to learn more just go to GOOGLE.COM and search DUCK EGG FAQs.

Wishing you the best! -Shell
To see if the embryo is alive it is rather easy. All you need is a really good light. It is called candling the egg.By shining a bright light on the egg in a dark room you can see the contents of the inside. You can use a standard light bulb in a lamp and place a small box over the bulb.Cut a hole in the box about half as big as the egg.Turn out all other lights place the egg over the hole and the light will shine through it.Though unless the egg is ready to hatch a cracked egg will not hatch. The main reason being the crack allows to much bacteria to enter the egg and it kills the embryo.

How can you stop a rooster from singing?

Answers:
A rooster crows for a variety of reasons, but mostly to state that this is HIS territory. Short of getting rid of him or keeping him in a dark place, that's just what roosters do.
Ax
Hello, yes you can cut off it's head, but trying to get them to stop crowing, which is their nature, is like asking a HUMAN to not eat ;)..Take Care :)
learn to enjoy it.
do you mean besides putting it in oven? start singing with it and enjoy the music.

I use to raise chickens. at one time i had fifteen roosters and about sixty hens. you are not going to stop them unless you keep them in the dark.
shoot it
duct tape but thats cruelty to animals
Get the hens to give it a good talking to - tell them to say how awful the porr fella's voice is, and how they would just love to do anything for him but the crowing puts them off so!
The only way we got ours to shut up was to chop its head off.
Make sure the rooster is living far enough out enough in the country where he "****-a-doodle-do" all he wants at the top of his lungs!!! And the neighbors won't hear him.

But seriously, you may want to try covering the cage at night so that at the crack of dawn when the sun rises, he won't rise to the occasion and "go to town"!

I actually have a rooster in my neighborhood and it really doesn't bother me. However my parrot has begun to mimic it's call!

Most birds "come alive" as soon as they bright light.
I have a parrot that I swear I can walk in the room in the middle of the night, and quickly turn on a bright light, and he instantly thinks it's morning and time to get up and hollar!

P.S. Why do people like "Jennifer" above my answer and others have to be so cruel and inhumane to birds with their answers? Why are you all even in this category to begin with if you don't like nor care for birds? You are offensive to other viewers, especially to the person who asked this question to begin with.

How can you see if a chicken's egg is fertalized? How can you see the baby chick, if you can see it at all?

i already tried a flashlight, but that just lets me see a dark circle.
Answers:
There is no guarantee that any egg is fertile, the only way to know for sure is by incubating them.Once you begin incubating the best way to tell if the egg is fertile or the best way to see the developing chick is by candling the egg.Candling is done by placing the egg over a strong light which will show through the shell. The best candler is a 60 to 100 watt standard light bulb places under a small cardboard box, with a hole half the size of the egg cut into the box place the egg over the hole and the light will shine through the egg.The best time to candle for fertility is after 7 days of incubation. At this point the developing embryo will be apparent you can also see developing blood vessels at this time. The site I posted shows quick and easy info.
Sonagram.
You can't tell the difference until it has been incubated for a few days. Then, when you shine a flashlight through the egg, you should see a web of veins radiating out from the centre.

If, however, at this stage of incubation, you see a dark, swirling mass, then it's 'addled', which means it will never hatch out.
There is a time frame hen it comes to candling an egg. Usually I will candle between 5 to 8 days after the egg has been laid. If it is fertilized then I can see the viens, and the heartbeating of the embryo. Since the chick grows so fast you wouldnt be able to see anything if you wiated to long to candle.

There is a company that sells monitor that you place the egg in and if the chick is still alive it will register the heart rate. But it is expensive, but very valuable to breeders of Exotic birds.

How can you keep quail eggs warm with out a inubator?

i found three quail eggs in my back yard and i know there still a live so i been keeping under a light but i"m preety shur that thats not going to keep them warm forever
Answers:
Some species of quail won't incubate their own eggs. I'm not sure if that's the case with your eggs (Japanese quail and painted quail are REALLY bad for that!), but you can make your own simple incubator. You'll need a plastic container such as a large ice cream pail, a lamp with a 60 watt bulb and a small container of water such as a tuna can filled with water and a sponge. You'll also want a layer or two of paper towel to give them a soft spot to sit. The eggs will need to be turned 2-5 times a day. and at absolute minimum, twice a day so the embryo doesn't stick to the insides of the shell. The babies will start hatching in a few weeks. Most start hatching at 17 days, but pipping can start as late as 19 days.

Babies are able to run around and eat adult food when they hatch. You'll need to put rocks in a small bowl that the babies can drink from. The rocks will prevent them from drowning. Sometimes you have to point them in the direction of their food and poke their beak into it before they realize it's edible.

That's about it. Good luck!
Read a book called Robert the Quail. The humans hatched him under a lamp. The eggs need to be turned often. Others will know more here.

What happened to the mother? Mother knows best.
You need to incubate them at 99.5 degrees F at all times and turn them at least 3 times if you want them to hatch. You will need a thermometer.
You can use a light bulb,
keep the eggs at 100*,
if the heat is too high,
or too low they will die.
The humidity needs to be
at 60% or the eggs will
not hatch. You can use a
small bowl of water, near
the heat source. It takes
16-18 days, then reduce the
temp to 70-80, when they
have hatched. Prepare a
warm dry place, with a
shallow water source, and
plenty of chick starter. The
area will need to be kept
very clean, or the chicks, will
eat their own manure and die.
The eggs were best left alone.

How can u tell male from female with cockatiels?

Answers:
Unlike budgies cockatiels are told by the colours of their feathers and various markings on their bodies. Depending on what colour bird you've got it could be very simple to tell or hard. Cockatiels in the wild are dimorphic which means you can tell the sexes just by looking at them.

Normal greys- These ones look just like they do in the wild, The male is all grey, with a white wing patch and a bright yellow face with orange cheek patches.
The female is the same but has a dull yellow face and cheek patches and also has yellow bars on her tail and her wings. Dots are also seen. The male has no barring or dots. If they're whitefaced the **** will have a bright white face and the hen will have a dull grey colour all over

Pied- These birds have grey and yellow or white areas. If they're white faces they may have cinnamon and white or grey and white. They're very hard to tell because the re-distribution of colour caused by the pied means that natural markings are erased. These are best told by whether they sing or talk at all. males are very vocal and will let you know about it. Females usually are quiet but will scream rather than whistle.

Lutino- An all white bird that can have suffusions of yellow throughout. Still has the yellow face and cheek patches.
Males don't have any barring or spots on them and have a bright yellow face. Females can be told by the barring on their tails if you hold them up to light. Although there is a lack of contrasting colours you can still see the yellow bars on the white feathers. A white faced lutino, or albino, is impossible to tell and is mainly guesswork.

Pearl- Beautiful birds with pearl lacings all over them. The male will lose his pearls by his second moult and will look like a normal grey cockatiel. Some do retain their pearls but very rarely. Females will keep their pearls and will have them all over their backs, wings and sometimes their chest. They may have a bright yellow face but don't let that fool you. Another hard one to tell.

Cinnamon- Just like the normal grey except birds are a brownish colour instead of grey. The male will still have the bright face compared to the female.

Hope this helps. As a guide, Males can be taught to talk and whistle. They will usually be very vocal even from a young age, especially if there are other males around that can teach them. They won't learn to talk however if you teach them to whistle first.
Females are usually quieter and screech rather than whistle. Some have been known to whistle but in all the years i've had birds i've never met a female whistler.
Hope this helps, if you need any more help feel free to contact me
I think females have grey beaks. If it isn't it's a male.
above their beaks, you will see an area with two holes for breathing. The color will either be beige or colored. If it is beige, it is most likely a girl. If it is colored (common colors are blue and purple) are most likely a boy.
Good Luck!
These days, with all of the cross-breeding of cockatiels, it can be kind of hard to tell. Usually, females have slightly 'duller' orange cheeks than males; at least, that's what I've been told. I also think that females sing much less than males.
its kind of hard to tell. we have a female cockatiel that everyone tries telling us is male because of her bright spots on her cheecks, but we know she is female cuz she lays eggs. the only way to really tell for sure is to either wait until they lay eggs or to take them to a vet and have a surgery or something done that will reveal the gender.
the easiest way i have found (other than face color) , and depending on what kind you have... is that males have very pronounced stripes on the underside of the tail feathers
ok first off, some others were referring to parakeets and not cockatiels.

Cockatiels are generally diamorphic which mean you can tell by looking at them.
Females if a dark mutation have horizontal barring on the underneath of their tails, males are sold ( if young the bars are also on the two outside under tail feathers of males)
Males cheek patches are brighter and larger then the females as well. The Males also whistle and talk where as the females rearly do.
I have a male and he is Cinnamon you can tell cus females do not talk or sing as much as males...the only for sure way you can tell with these birds is a blood test.I had one done on mine and it costs 35 to 45 dollars.

How can our family encourage our pet bird to trust and accept us?

Answers:
When did you purchase him?

here are some tips as to how I got my birds to be trusting.

1. Leave them alone the first day or two. Remember, you took them away from what they considered home. They have to get use to their surroundings and you. handling them right off the bat will stress them.

2. Get a chair and sit by their cage. Talk to them in soft voices. Talk to them everytime you walk by the cage. Even at night when you cover them, talk to them. I use to say "Bindie go night night? night night bindie..." in a sing songy voice. say "sleepy baby huh..." as you walk by the cage at night if you pass by to go to the bathroom or the kitchen or whatever.

This gets them use to your voice.

3. Be slow with them. Don't shove your hand in the cage. if the wings are clipped, let them come out of their own free will, then gently try to encourage them to get on the floor.

birds like to be perched higher up... so when they are on the floor, they are more apt to see your finger as a way up and are more willing to go on your finger.

Gently touch their belly with your finger and say "up up." I usually add "Gentle" in a soft voice as their climbing up if they use their beaks.

once they are use to getting onto your finger from the floor, do whats called laddicing.

Get them on one finger, then rub their belly with the other hand and say "up up" then repeat. This will get them use to Up up meaning get on the finger.

4. if they bite, don't yell, don't pull away, don't flail around making them fall or fly. You'll just stress them out and disrupt the bonding process. Sometimes bites can hurt, but as a bird owner, you'll need to learn to grin and bear it. I pull my finger away from the beak, rub the back of the neck in a reassuring way and calmly say... "Bindie sue.. gentle." and after a while, they learn to understand gentle means to not bite so hard.

Birds are very smart. Mine can knows the difference between colors. If I hold up a purple card and say "Orange" he says "No no" if I say "Purple" he says "Pretty bird" which is his yes.

above anything, go nice and slow and give them time to adjust. the rest will come around.

it just takes time and patience.
The same way humans come to trust and accept; kindness, love, care and above all, patience.
Talk to it alot in a soft voice. Spend time close to the cage. Eventually you can put your hand in the cage, not touching it. Just take it a step further each time it starts to get comfortable with your advancements. I read the other day that some birds bite because they aren't being fed right and don't feel well. Make sure to take good care of it. I feel like biting when I don't feel well, too! :D
I have two parrotlets. I've learned that the best approach is to be calming around them. It helps to speak calmly, respect their territory (their cages), and use lots of patience.

There are some excellent bird lists that you can join like Parrotlets Plus or Parrotlets Express where breeders and others are more than happy to offer suggestions and advice, even if your bird is not a parrotlet.

Good luck!
Hello, depends on the kind of bird...things like parrots require alot of attention..talking to them %26 some treats..etc till the bird gets used to you all, especially if the bird is new to the family..just time, repetitiveness, kindness %26 slow movements, quick or jerky moves often freak out any animal or bird..Take Care :)
Sandy W,
Parrotlets Are excellent tiny parrots. I have a pair of pacific island parrotlets. The male {named Peep} thinks he is human. As for the question, and this may sound stupid, if all else fails get a book or something to distract yourself, get in the bathtub along with your bird and your book, and read. This forces the bird to accept being around you. Keep it up and your bird will accept you. Try it. I have done this with cockatiels. It works.

How can i trap wild birds in my backyard???help any ideas?

i want to trap wild birds in my backyard what traps can i make that are cheap and easy?????? any ideas
Answers:
i dunno if this is a genuine question? my dad used to make a little "trap" when we were little so we could see some wild birds and learn about them (but not hold them or scare them) then we would let them go but i'm not going to tell you how because i dunno why you want to trap them! you might be a psyco or u could just want to do it to show and teach ya kids but either way i'm not gonna tell you just incase!
HEY! I dont want to waste my limit on this, BUT WHAT THE CRAP?! you trap birds? that is the stupiest idea Ive ever heard!!!!! DO NOT DO THAT!
Make a pie---they will go right into it
you shouldn't trap wild birds, as it makes them wild.
yes go and play with the traffic
Why do you wanna trap wild birds?? They're not meant for captivity...just go to the pet store and get a canary or something...
im not sure of any bird trappers for sale anywhere.. look of ebay/google/amazon, etc. any sights that might sell stuff.

Good luck,
Unknown %26lt;33333
i think your the wild one that needs to be trapped
go outside with a net and hide in the bushes, then chuck some bread out and wait. as soon as a small collective of birds start to gather in your garden dive out and try to catch them in the net. i dought very much if this crazy plan will work but why would you want to catch wild birds anyway?
that is illegal.just so you know
First of all, Why would you want to do that??
We used to use milk crates. Just put some corn or seeds on the ground and prop a milkcrate up on a stick. Tie a string to the stick and wait. Pull the string when a bird gets under there.
ps-Wild birds don't like getting caught. Beaks and claws suck.
are you out on day release or something ?
i think you get it from all the answers above, but technically if an animal is wild .it is meant to stay wild, unless you have a exotic animal licence, which in your case i doubt if you can get one
Wild birds belong in the Wild if you trap them they will die so is better to live them be in their habitat
why dont you get job %26 a life...then you wont want to do silly things mate!!
trapping any wild bird is against the law. You can be fined or imprisoned. Leave wild birds alone.
I know in some states, and farm locations they have bird traps just for RELOCATING them. Like sparrows, they breed real fast and on a farm they become a nuisance. So farmers trap them, then RELOCATE them, do to them damaging their feilds and such. BUT if your just trapping them to do ugly things to them then your procreation rights should be taken away along with your freedom.

How can I tell what sex my 2 year old parakeet is?

When I first got Pebble, the cere was blue, then it changed to dark and crusty brown-orange, now it is going back to blue... The cere is now mostly blue with traces of orange on the bottom.
Answers:
In general, the color of a budgie's cere is the simplest indicator of sex in adult budgies: males are blue, and females are white, light beige, reddish, or brown. While it is fairly accurate, the color of the cere cannot always be used to sex a budgie. With some color varieties, like albinos, lutinos, fallows, and some recessive pieds like harlequins, both males and females have beige or pink colored ceres. Other visual sexing methods include females having an almost invisible, whitish rings around their nostrils, and males having more rounded, bulbous ceres, both of which are often hard to recognize to the untrained eye. And many people also say that females bite harder than males and that males have rounder heads while females heads are more flat on the top
More than likely it is a boy. A easy way to tell, is if you can interact with it, move your finger up and down in front of his face. If he has a tendancy to look like he is nodding his head or upper portion of his body, it is no doubt a boy, or a crossdresser
Sounds like Pebbles should be called Bam-Bam.
Hm.I would guess female. I was going to tell you that the cere is dark on females, and light colours on males...but I guess you know that already. ;)
Sounds like a boy to me,That happened to my pet budgie, and the vet said it was natural for boy birds.
boys have a bluish cere and females have a pinkish or purplish cere.
in general, the nose on the male is brighter than on femalee. if its a dull color, its a femal. i have had several parakeets.
i had a bird like that once and it laid an egg and i knew it was a girl : ) easy
If you reeeaaallly need to know, which you probably don't unless you are concerned with breeding an Avian Veterinarian can take a small blood sample and have it DNA tested. The most acurate way to tell. Cost can range between $60-80 dollars for the test alone. (add exam fee)
by the color of the cere on the top of his or her beak. the darker blue male the lighter female

How can i tell the difference between an Amazon Parrot male or female?

I have an Amazon Parrot at home that seem to life up its tail at me everytime I touch him/her? I am not sure maybe some sexual behavor. I was wondering if there is a way i can tell if its a male or female. i should also add that I am the only person that can touch the bird. If my brothers try to touch him/her tryes to bite. I got this bird about one year ago from a friend of a friend so I dont know much about its history.
Answers:
by its pecker?
the male well be brighter in color
You check for a PENIS or a VAGINA.

Birds have those genital too...

HHAHAH
I have a parrot to its a male the pet store owner told me he is pretty dark. Im pretty sure that the female has a little bit lighter tone than the male parrot.
I think the only way to tell for sure is through a DNA sample that a vet can do. That is how my sister found out the sexes of her birds. Alot of birds become one-owner birds and will attack anyone but the one they bond to. They are very tempermental! But none-the-less entertaining and fun! Best of luck with your newly acquired Amazon! LL
You may go to:
www.healthgene.com/avian/dna_s...

This will tell you how to sex your bird. Most birds do pick their favorite people. Guess you're the one!
The best way is to do DNA sexing. I think vent sexing is possible, but DNA sexing is much easier, and not too expensive.
Its is very difficult to tell the difference, the best way are to look at the color( males have a bit brighter colors) or you can go to your local vet and ask for a DNA test or a surgical sex test. My bird had a surgical test and it took about 10 minutes and after that she was ready to play. The problem about the DNA test is that it takes a very long time to get the results and the vet will need to make your bird bleed. The Surgical test is very quick and is cheaper then the DNA test, the only problem is that they need to give your bird some gas to make it fall asleep. You will need to not give your bird food for a few hours but after the test you can feed it. I hope this helps.
Males and females have the same behavior, but if you really want to know what sex they are take the bird to an Avian and have a sex test ran. All it they do is draw blood, and it will help you. If you have a female they need calcium just like us females, for when thhey start laying eggs they get depleated from calcium, and if they are not laying thier might be a problem.
I was told by a breeder that if a female starts lifting its tail when touched it may lay an egg. I guess you would know for sure then. If you really need to know get a dna test it doesn't cost much.
You can wait for an egg or compare your amazon to a known male or female (females in general tend to be bigger) but really the best way is through dna sexing. And every bird we've had since I was a little kid has preferred one gender of person to another.
It is very hard to tell the sex but it sounds like you may have a female. We have a yellow naped amazon that we thought was male but last year she layed 2 eggs.she also did the tail in the air thing accompanied by a horrible whiny screech.
Amazons usually prefer one person , mine loves me and will tolerate my hubby but that is it no one else can get close

How can i tell if my ducks are male or female.?

I got three WHITE PEKIN ducks the monday before easter there not full grown but not little ducklings either. How can i tell if they are male or female. Its O.K. if you can only tell wether there male or female when their older still give me an answer.
Answers:
Its very difficult to tell gender when they are young. When they get older the male will get a curled tail feather. That's really the only distingushing characteristic between male and female.
look for the penis
i now i now ! look at there noses the darker one is a gril and the lighter one is a boy i have 2 brids (i am going to be avet when i grow up)
The males are usually more colorful. And have curled tail feathers.

How can i tell if my cockatiels are males or females?

I own 2 cockatiels and am interested in breeding. I wouldnt like to know how to sex them.
Answers:
Feather sexing is the cheapest.
http://www.avianbiotech.com/questionsabo...
Well i could tell by the way they look, the males are mostly darked colored and females are mostly lighter in color and also by the way the sing, the males usually sing more than the famale cockatiels
Female cockatiels tend to have dots all the way up under their wings. If your cockatiel is young you may have to wait a while [year and a half or so] until you can REALLY tell.
Male cockatiels may have the dots but not all the way up his wing. One way to tell for sure would be to go to your avian vet and get a DNA test done. That should cost about $50. Hope this info helps.
you can usually check there pelvic area and the wider it is it is female when the bones are so close it is a male...or you can do a blood test about 35 to 40 dollars each.
Only a veterinarian can come to that conclusion by performing a blood test. Birds organs are internal and not visible to the naked eye, like that of a dog or cat.
These days, with all of the cross-breeding and all attempting to make 'prettier' cockatiels, it's really hard to tell. A tip is to look at the orange cheek patches; for males, these patches are brighter than on females, which should have slightly duller, more 'softly' colored orange cheeks.
Also, males sing, and like to flaunt about. Mine will lean down and spread his wings, or do little birdy backflips in the cage. Females are much quieter, and don't sing nearly so much. No flaunting. (Not to be confused with grooming!)

Just a few quick tips, if you want to avoid professionals or labs or whatnot.
It depends on the mutation you are trying to sex, females have mainly grey faces with only traces of yellow around the beak, eyes, and forehead. Their cheek patches appear duller since there is a wash of grey over the orange and their crests are grey. They have yellow spots on the underside of their flight feathers and conspicuous yellow and grey barring on their tails.

After their first molt at 6 to 8 months males lack the tail barring and the flight feather spots but have a bright yellow face and 'bib'. Their crests are mainly yellow with grey only at the tip. The cheek patches are a bright orange since there is no grey there to dull them. The white wing patch is immaterial when sexing.

Normal Whiteface, Cinnamon, Fallow, Silver, Yellowcheek, Pastelface, and any other mutation which results in a basically grey or brown bird with white or yellow accents can be sexed in the same way as the greys. That is females will have grey or brown faces, spots under their flight feathers, and barring on their tails and generally have lighter cheek patches. Males will lack the spots and bars but have white or yellow faces and crests.

Pieds can be difficult to sex but may be sexed by dark tail or wing feathers...indicating male, if you see baring it's either young or a female.

What mutation do you have?

Males are also more vocal than females and whistle alot more.
I have a male cockatiel, Buddy and a way we was able to tell that he is a male is the fact that Buddy's cheek feathers are bright orange. Another way we found out he is a male is the fact that Buddy would climb on top of the cage and rub himself on the handle. You read correct. The cockatiel we have would actually ma$turbate on the handle of the cage. We could tell when he was because he would move his tail feathers left and right quickly.
Plus, males learn how to talk. Females just sing.
Male cockatiels are usually more vocal and females are usually more quiet. the male chirps alot and is more likely to learn how to talk.

How can i tell a hen from a rooster when they are first hatched?

Answers:
I have no experience in this at all but found this link for you: http://www.howtodothings.com/pets-and-an...
You can't...you can only tell when they mature and whether or not a comb develops...hen or rooster?
Hi! I am an experienced poultry/other fowl owner. Ok, days olds, by hatcheries are "vent" sexed (by thier rear) but, for me it is tough to tell and not very pretty. I do this: take your first and second finger and hold the chick's head, if it scratches and struggles, it is probably a rooster, if it sits there, it is probably a hen. Do not worry, it doesnt hurt them. It is not 100% true, but, you never can be. I sometimes go to other, more experienced people, they always hav their tricks of the trade.
well you really cant do your self maby the a feed store or a tractor supply could tell for you.and you really half to wait till there big enough .if you haven't got any yet you can find places that sell them bye ether hen or rooster.
Unless they are sex links (special cross breeds where you can tell by the down colour at hatch what their gender is), then there is vent sexing, but that's very difficult and skilled to do. Most people wait until they are about 8 weeks old, which is when the comb and wattles start getting bigger, and the tail feathers get pointy rather than round.
Look tween their tiny lil legs !!

How can i tame my lovebird?

i had a lovebird that my family gave me, he's not that young now, he's kinda old and lonely in his cage. i feel sorry for him and wanted to tame him so that he won't be lonely. but i heard they can only be tamed since young, is this true?? if not, how can i tame him? pls help.
thanx
Answers:
This totally works, I did it with a rabid parakeet.

Okay, first, get two dowels or sticks of some sort. If your love bird bites, get longer sticks. Get your lovebird and somehow get him to a corner of the room. Put him on the floor and block his escape with your body, most effectively done by sitting cross-legged facing the wall (bird being between you and the corner). After he calms down, start stroking him with the sticks. Every time he goes to bite the stick pet him with the other stick in the other hand. Eventually, after doing this for a while, he'll stop fussing and just let you pet him. When this occurs--and only when this occurs-- start moving your hands up the sticks so your hands get closer to the bird. Try doing it one hand at a time, at first. Your goal is to get your finger to pet him rather than the sticks. Progress slowly, you don't want him to take a chunk out of your finger or to be more afraid of you. Make no rapid movements, stay calm, sing or coo to him.

This worked for me after 2-3 days, no more than 30 minutes per day (exceeding this will cause the bird unneeded stress), and my bird was 2-years old and totally murderous. However, some birds may take up to 2 weeks, so just be patient. After he gets comfortable with you touching him, you can train him to do things like step-up. Start off using perches since most birds feel more comfortable stepping from perch to perch rather than an unstable finger. Training your bird tricks also provides great quality time, and it's fun to show friends. Be creative and give the little guy attention!
its good when u tame them young so they will get used to you!
spend alot of time with him hand feeding him some treats and put a dandelion near the door open and do that every time so they get used to you, and when he ready he''l hop in your hand and you''ll be amazed!!
generally, younger better but i don't think it's only young. i have a "young" bird that isn't tame altho i tried. but it has another companion so it's fine. if u can;t tame it, get it a companion. lovebirds love their companions and you can just watch them having a great time. this is my suggestion only.

How can I stop my cats killing birds?

Ive just walked into the kitchen and Ive seen millions of feathers! and nowive found a dead bird it was only a baby!
I am devistated!
I cant stop them even my 3 leg'd cat is a top killer!!!

Should I buy 8 bells cause I have 4 cats! 2 for each cat!

Please help me!
Answers:
Bells are good, try to keep them inside a little more. Dont encourage birds in your garden.
just get rid of ur cats or "KILL" them.
its just nature - you shouldnt try to stop them
mmm, cats . carnivores ... so upsetting .
Keep them in the house. Unless you have birds flying around in the living room, this should take care of the problem.
The only way to stop them completely is to keep them inside, which is safer for them anyway. Did you know that the average lifespan of an indoor cat is 2 to 3 times that of an outdoor cat?
Yeah that sounds a great idea that.
bells are a good idea or get rid of the cats its there nature they kill birds mice that there job they did it for you as a present they think there doing you a favor
You've only got a couple of options if you don't want birds to die:

- keep the cats inside
- build a cat run

There's great info from the sites below. Quite practical really.
It's part of nature unless you really love your birds. Why don't keep the birds in a cage unless it's Silvester the cat of course
It is natural , they retain hunting instincts even if they are a pet.
You can't stop a cat from being a cat. Cats do what cats do, eat small mammals and birds. A bell may help, but baby birds fall out of their nests and all the bells in Westminster Abbey will not save them from your kitties. You can keep them inside if you really like birdies more than you want your kitties to go out. I am sorry, but those are the only alternatives that are available to you. Please do not be too distressed however. In all the worlds history, cats have been eating birds and there are still lots of birds to go around. Maybe you would feel better if you gave to the Audobon Society. They help preserve bird habitats all over the world. You could feel better that you are helping make nice homes for birdies that they may be attracted to and not be so near to your kitties!
Keep your cats inside the house and keep the windows closed. you can buy those 8 bells to alarm birds to run away!!
do not let the windows open for the cat to jump out or for the bird to fly in and you would have no problem with your cat kill all of these birds. You can't stop a cat from being a cat. Get your neighbours to buy a Eagle, that should sort out yours cats problem.Cats are hunters, you can never change that! The only thing you can do is keep them as indoor cat (mine are and they are quite happy). Have a cat run for them to go outside and admire the birds!! Bells generally dont work, cats are very clever and can move so that the bells dont ring. My cat has 2 on her collar but when she stalks a bird (in her cage) it doesn't ring.So many benefits to indoor cats! one being that if they eat birds etc they could get diseases or become ill from eating them, especially if the animal has been poisoned e.g. rat.

Good Luck!
A collar with a bell can help. If you can keep them in during the early morning this will also help (from about 4am-9am) or overnight .
Unfortunately cats will be cats. You can certainly try bells on collars as it gives the birds a warning.

I managed to get mine to stop by a simple method.

They often bring them to you as a gift, thinking you will be really chuffed, ha, yeah! Anyway I just ignored them and showed I wasn't happy. Not shouting but just a firm voice. I could say anything since they don't understand but the tone gave it away.

They soon got that look in their eye when they had one that said oops, you don't like these do you. And eventually didn't bother since I clearly wasn't impressed.

Another method I have used is to just squirt a little bit of water from a washing up bottle (just water, not with the liquid still). This just lets them associate bird stalking with a bad result. that worked well too.

Hope that helps.
kill the cat
Domestic cats have more impact on decimating songbird populatons than anything else - hunting birds is in a cat's nature. You can't make them stop. You have to keep the cats in the house if you don't want them to hunt birds.

Having the cat wear a bell might help a little but cats are just natural hunters and they will still kill birds.
You can't, it is part of cats nature to kill birds. What you can do though is make life easier for the birds. If your cats don't already wear them, fit them with collars with bells, it will at least give the birds a warning that the cat is on the prowl. Trim back all of your low shrubs and plants, so that the cat can't hide underneath and ambush the birds.
Put bird feeders up high so that the cats can't reach. If you have nesting birds in the garden, place perches around it so that the babies have got somewhere to fly to when they are practising.
I've got cats and I have managed to help a family of Blue ****, raise and safely get the babies away, so it can be done.
The only other alternative is to keep your cats in
Hi EmoGirl, you cant stop your cats from doing something that is intrinsic to them. Plus it is also their way of showing their affection for you by presenting you with a 'gift.' There are many options that have already been given to you. But if you insist on letting them go out, then you will always have this problem.
Put bells on his neck!!!just keep an i on him
Hi, Cat's are Cat's unfortunately you cant really stop them from killing bird's and mice. I know it is upsetting i hate this time of year when baby birds are abundant and very inexperienced. I particularly hate in about another 4 weeks time when the Blue **** that have nested in next doors nest box come out i try to keep watch so i know when they are due out of the nest and keep my cats in. Natural born killers that's what cat's are, but we love them.
put the cat to sleep and the bird won't die then
no. get a balloon and every time he or she goes to get a bird pop the balloon then hopefully he or she won't do it again.

remember keep on doing it in till he or she stops

i hope it has helped bye
bells r norm a good way 2 stop it try that
You can get collars that make a noise when the cat pounces to distract them from catching the bird/mouse
Bells are about as useful as *** on a ***
... well, you get the idea.

Be a responsible cat owner. Your cats will live longer and healthier if you keep them as HOUSE CATS.
Keep the killers INSIDE.
I have several friends that have completely enclosed outdoor kennels. It's a cat Disneyland. They get their time outside, are completely protected from animals getting at them, and from them getting at other animals.

Cats are one of the top reasons the small bird population has crashed.
.
bells a good idea it will alert the birds so he wont kill any
Dont put them in the same room and if the cats are out playing put the birds in a cage if the birds are playing put the cats in a cage or if you love your birds more then your cats put the cats up for adoption or give them the ultimate sleeping pill "death" if you love your cats more you can let the cats kill the birds

How can I stop birds from staring at themselves in my side-view mirrors - all the while, pooping on my car?

Answers:
I can think of several options. One might be to use Golf Club Driver covers to cover your mirrors, maybe some that look like a cat! You can also use a small sticker (one that doesnt obstruct your view), I have found that birds often do NOT like pictures of other birds, possibly a small black bird sticker in the corner should do the trick! Another option is to put a sticker on your window that faces the position the birds would be while looking in the mirror. (to explain: the mirror will show items that are not actually on the mirror like a sticker properly positioned on the window) I used this on the kitchen window to keep the birds from tearing up the planter and it worked perfectly!
snipe them with a bb gun
glare back fiercely... won't stop the poop tho.. just drive on real quickly
isn't it aggravating? i didn't know birds could be so vane. reminds me of humans.
I had a friend who had that very same problem! He ended up cutting sleeves off an old t-shirt and made mirror covers...was the strangest thing.

Last week I had a cardinal flying into my window all day non-stop for 3 days. I was told he was maybe trying to protect his territory and saw his reflection and thought it was another bird. Don't know but evidently that's a common problem too, especially with cardinals. I thought the crazy bird was going to end up killing himself. Maybe the bird is having the same kind of issue with your mirrors. Good luck...try the sleeve covers!

How can I make a parakeet smile?

Seriously he keeps biting me ...stupid bird.

How about this ...Does anyone know a good parakeet recipe?
Answers:
I've found that most male budies are attracted to tall men wearing tight lingerie, bright make up and tall, black knee high boots. The more frills the better! Something about how Transvestites and two gendered people dress that turns them on. Who knows what really goes on in those fuzzy heads?

Budgies go great with fruit and cloves. You'll need more than one. Not very satisfying otherwise.

Okay - serious answer (Do I HAVE to?!). Try to spend some time close to the cage and feed treats via the hand. You can even capture the brat and towel them. When toweled, gently pet them. it can take as long as 3 months to tame a budgie, so it takes some stern willpower (something I don't have) and patience. There's several books out there that can help train the budgie down. I'll post my favorites below. Good Luck!
Dude, Calcified beak...no smiling.

However, you need to hand train the critter. Have some parakeet treats at hand, scritch him with two fingers on the back of his neck, rub his beak...Goofy, but all birds love this eventually. Be patient.

Also, a little Sage, a little Garlic, some Onion...slow oven for about 15 minutes...Be sure to pluck first!
Tell him a bird joke.
Seriously, clip his wings and handle him with gloves. He will learn to trust you because he will learn that he will fall and the gloves will teach him it doesn't hurt when he bites you.

How can i make a bird shut up!?

my bird is a cockiteal and it keeps chirping about every 1.5 seconds. my brother is trying to study in the other room with a math tutor and....the bird keeps doing it. is it because it is night and birds naturally do this? (it is 7:26) and what way can i make it be quiet. should i go over to it and stare at it? put somthing over it?
Answers:
Many birds desire peace and quiet so they can go to sleep once it gets dark. The hour or two before dark they often get the flock's attention by instinct. You and your family are that bird's flock.

If your bird is used to being out and getting handled, the bird may be sweetly begging for you to bring him/her to where you are so it can be a part of the activity. Even if you don't normally get the bird out of the cage, if it is used to the family activity being in it's room it can be trying to let you know it is lonely.

If you determine that the bird is wanting to go to bed, then covering the bird and, if possible, moving it to a quiet room might solve your problem. One word of caution though, Cockatiels are given to night frights, so don't cover the bird totally and put it in a dark room without a night light. They need some light at night so that they don't injure themselves if they get scared.
Birds will sometimes chirp when they are seeking attention. Give your bird attention. If he continues to do it, try and train him to be quiet. If all else fails, you just have a loud, noisy bird. ;o)
Putting a cloth over the cage usually works
you cant you have to leave it!

good luck!
put it in its cage and
1) put a towel over it

2) shoot it
Cover his cage at night. Put a little birdie mirror in his cage,he will talk to it.
Usually putting a light blanket or cloth over the cage quites them down.
cook it.
The perfect way is to get a pieece of duck tape and put it on the bird. Then the bird will shut up
mutilate a bird body in front of it, then it will be quiet
Putting an old towel over the cage can help. My parakeets love music and sunshine, and start chirpping whenever anything to do with that starts. I just cover them with a towel, and they start to calm down.
introduce it to a cat and lock them togethet in a cage. it should get quiet soon after...;deadly quiet.
Put the cage outside and open the door. Let it sit for a few minutes...
Cockatiels have varied personalities. Some are quiet, while others may be attention starved. I would make sure the bird had clean food %26 water. One way I shut my bird up is with fresh fruit or veggies. My little birdie only makes noise when she wants something...ie., attention, food, water, or something is scaring her.
Take the bird out and play with it. Birds are social and do not like to be locked alone in their cages. Don't get frustrated, just learn your pets needs.
birds are always wanting attention... if you gave it a certain amount of attention at 1 point and you aren't giving it now...start giving it more attention.
another thing u might want to try is putting a thin cloth over their cage, but don't put it for like...days at a time
Its a bird nothig will ever shut it up

increase the watts on the bulb have 2 lights daytime night time
Use an extra smaller wattage bulb at night time?
Insulate the box with towels or foam or whatever you can to minimize heat loss through the walls of the incubator and decrease the ventilation by covering some of the vent holes, not all but some.

Move the incubator to an area where there is less temperature fluctuation at night.

How can I keep squirrel out of my bird house?

Answers:
I have feed birds for some time now and I just put out extra for the squirrel. When I put bread out, he pretty much leaves the feeders alone.
If you have a bird feeder on a pole or post this can be pretty effective: apply a coat of petroleum jelly to the pole or post that your bird house or feeder resides on. Squirrels won't be able to climb the pole or post.
After battling this issue for some time, I finally gave in, spent the extra money and bought a squirrel proof feeder. There are many styles to choose from. The squirrels still try but they no longer are able to empty the thing daily. Same issue with raccoons.

How can I keep pigeons off my roof?

When I first moved into my house their was a nest on the roof and I had my husband take it down because the pigeons would make noise in the middle of the night and wake us up but I didn't know there were eggs in them. They constantly come to our roof and even near the fireplace where it'll echo. Is there any way to keep them from returning? They're really annoying.

How can I keep birds from flying into our plate glass windows?

Is there a way to mark the windows or something to put over them?
Answers:
Yes, there are transparent stickers you can buy that are very hard for the human eye to see but the birds see them well. Don't ask how that works.
maybe put a picture of a hawk or eagle on the window, the birds wont come near it
stick some of those stained glass things on the windows with the suction cups...i don't know what they are called, but try to put something on the window that they can see, and lets them know that they can't fly through it.
Store that specialize in wild bird supplies and feeders have large cutouts that look exactly like owls..hang this in your window and it should do the trick.
The birds can't see the glass so they crash into it.
don't wash your windows
This solution WORKS. We hang old Cd's inside the window, showing the shiny coloured side out, say about half way down the length of the window. Cd's and DVD's reflect all colours of light, and the birds see it and avoid it.

Our problem was that we have triple-paned windows that reflect all of the light from the sky, the appearance from the OUTSIDE is that the window IS a piece of sky. Birds were flying into them regularly.

Hanging old Cd's in the window SHINY side OUT, really does help.
find a vet that has a reputation for working with birds, or a local pet store that works with birds, and get the wings on your birds clipped. there are many differant dedrees of wing clippings you can give your bird. one that allows no flying at all.. to one that offeres only level flight. feather trimming does not hurt the bird, and they do not feel it...as im sure you already know, a birds bones are all hollow, and can be broken very easy.

How can i incubate an egg that i found, without an incubator?

Sometimes an egg will just drop when the female is not on the nest. You really can't hatch it.
Hello, Nice Though but best to just toss the egg if you can't get it back to the nest..if it just fell out %26 you safely reach the nest ... it could have been a bad egg so the parents rolled it on out..sorry, the news is not better, just how things %26 Nature is ..it can seem cruel to us humans, but it's best to leave Nature just be %26 not interfere, almost impossible to save a natual wild egg..they aren't like chicken or reptile eggs ( %26 only reptile experts can do reptile eggs - they really have special needs %26 requirements ) ..Take Care
We used to set up just a plain small cardboard box, cushion it with material/old shirt etc, and set a small lamp where the lamp shines into the box. Pin a pillow case/sheet/ piece of material or blanket around the bottom of the lamp, and around the box. Do not block off the top of the lamp - it can catch the material on fire. It should keep the egg warm enough... Use at least a 40 watt bulb. Good luck.
It is not fool proof but you can use a light bulb placed very close to the egg - you will have to make sure it is warm but not too hot and turn it daily - but then what? Do you have the time to feed whatever hatches out - and then teach it to fly? As a kid I had grand plans of hatching my own little pet. I have even taken in baby birds that have fallen out of the nest - but only once did the bird live - and it already had feathers it was just injured. It is a lot of work

How can i house train a duck?

i am NOT using diapers and am NOT keeping my duck outside there is animals tht will eat it so i need help or my dad is going to kill and eat my pet help !!!!
Answers:
Why don't you just build it a small outside pen to keep it safe from the animals that can kill it.Where I live there are a host of wild animals which would eat the birds I keep.If the animals here can't get in my pens I am sure you could do the same where you are.
You cannot potty train a duck.when they have to go they just go.The reason is they do not have full control over their bowels.
Why would you want to?? Ducks arent really housepets.
i dont think you can
can't be done.
I think ducks carry lice. I wouldn't want one inside. Ducks were meant to be outside, if you don't have the space for it you shouldn't have it. Bring it to a pond where there are other ducks.
well you should talk to a vet or even get him a built in pond so he can poop in there ..srry thats all i got.good luck
i had ducks as a kid too...honestly they are stubborn and i dont think you can house train them. we used to keep ours outside and they would sleep with the dog. my mom says as they get older they learn to poop in the grass but they really cant be trained. i wish i could give a better answer. what about newspaper?
Ducks dont carry lice. THey also can be kept inside but its not easy because they are messy animals. My suggestion woudl be to make a pen outside for him or in your garage to sleep in at night. That way he can hang out with you during the day. I woudl join a group for pet duck owners, you may find some better tips there.

How can I help my cockatiel?

We found her on our front yard wandering on our porch and made her our pet since nobody claimed her. We've had her for 2 years and she lives with my conure in a large cage. She's very paranoid about everything and doesn't like anyone touching her and flies/runs away from us. (So maybe her past owners mistreated her?) She likes when the conure nibbles her neck or head but then 2 seconds later she attacks him as if she forgot who the other bird was. She always isolates herself when I take her our and bring her into my room. She likes to stand next to my closet mirror for hours. (I'm guessing she thinks of her reflection as a kind of her own to company her?). But my mom doesn't want to buy her another one and if we gave her to someone who would, my conure would be devasted because the conure is protective over her, but it seems like the cockatiel doesn't really care. Also, she always plucks her own chest feathers and screams while she does so as if shes hurting herself. Is she depressed?
Answers:
There is a book called Good Bird! by Barbara Heidenreich. I recommend that you get it. Here's a link:
http://www.amazon.com/dp/1895270278?tag=...
you should call your local vet about the plucking while screaming. you should try to tame her; clip her wings. if you are sure that the concure is cleaning her than im not sure she does that. she may also fight with other cockatiels, so if she does than she is aggressive.

How can I help a bird that doesn't fly?

There is a bird by my house that won't fly and doesn't hop away when I go near it. It hops but usually just stands there. I put water on a Q-Tip and it drank some and tried to bite at a worm I held up to it but it shakes its head and the worm flies out of its mouth. It's not a full grown bird but not quite a baby bird. It keeps looking almost straight up or straight ahead but never down at the worm I put on the ground next to it. How can I help it?
Answers:
it is most likely a fledgling that has left the nest but has not yet learned to fly. The parents are most likely tending to it. You can watch it from a safe distance to see if the adults are coming to feed. Keep in mind they will not come if you are too close to the chick or if they see you. They may not come that often as they need some time to gather food, so you may have to be really patient. If you know FOR SURE the parents are not around, you should take this bird to a wildlife rehab in your area...but really it's best chance of survival is with it's parents.
when birds are weak, they don't feel like themselves. It's not a good idea to feed worms to a bird when they are weak. Let it rest. Put the food nearby when it feels like eating it will do so.

How can i get the build up on my parakeet's nose to go away?

the nasal area is built up and is starting to close up the nasal holes
Answers:
Your budgie needs to be seen by an avian vet. It sounds like he may have scaly face mites. If it is, it needs to be treated before it does permanent damage.

For more info

You can use this to help you find a vet in your area. http://www.aav.org/vet-lookup
A warm wash cloth with just water on it if you can not clear it up it could be infected and needs a vet check
Your parakeet needs to go to a vet.
if it is scaley face mites , you can treat them either with an ointment from the pet shop or by using mineral oil and a cotton bud. Cover the scale area in oil being careful not to get it in the birds nostrils.

This is a slow method but does work if you do it at least daily.

How can I get my Parrot to talk?

I inherited a Parrot from an elderly aunt recently. It is an African Grey which are suppposed to be great talkers. This one is only capable of 'saying' three things. It says " News on the hour, every hour", which I think its copied from the TV. It imitates the toilet flushing, and also sings the chorus from Jailhouse Rock. This is quite entertaining, but not after the 500th time. Any advice on getting it to talk please?
Answers:
African greys are great birds and very smart. I've never done any thing to "teach" my timneh grey to talk-he just picked it up on his own.The fact that your bird DOES say a few words and sings is really an indication that he is accomplished at talking or imitating sounds that interest him.

Your grey may actually have a larger vocabulary but those particular things are the most interesting to him right now and like a child, he repeats them over and over because it's fun. It's also possible that he is saying them to comfort himself after losing his owner, especially if he is saying anything in her voice and that she watched the news at the same time every day.

Greys are very sensitive and subject to stress so give him some time to adjust and get to know his new family. They really are like children and grieve for lost loved ones. He may just need to be in a quiet space for awhile until he gets de-stressed.

Once he is more comfortable, he may take interest in learning new sounds and voices, but like a mischievous child, if they know something is bugging you, they may just say it all the more to get a rise out of you. They LOVE drama! The louder and more animated you get in front of them, the more they love it!

Good luck with your new friend. You are very lucky to have him.
just talk to it all the time.
It will watch your mouth, so stay close.
The more you play with it, the more it will be stimulated and motivated to interact. I got a cockatoo
keep on saying something over and over again
try talking to to and eventually it will start remembering phrases
just repeat some words over and over again.
From what I understand, repeat, repeat %26 repeat. Takes time, then one day, they just get it. Give him a treat too to encourage him.
you can say hello and he should say hello because i have a bird like that he and talks and says hello!

good luck!
sit him next 2 a radio and maybe he'll start singing
The parrot learned what it heard a lot, repeatedly. Repetition and reward is the key.
Repeat, with expression. When it gets it, give it a treat. Every day, 2 or 3 times a day.
how you said he learned it in the tv.and what does he say "new on the HOUR,EVERY HOUR" so he has learned through repetision and you should repeat things i think i dont know but that what i learned in tv.repetition hope it helped and remember by repetition you can learn anything =) try it out.

ps dont teach him how to say bad words lol
With African Greys, they need to be well socialized and comfortable to be able to learn to talk. They best learn to talk when you talk TO them not at them. Don't sit there in front of him and repeat over and over what you want him to learn. Just make sure to talk to him to every day and he'll pick it up. It takes a while, but he'll learn. And plopping him in front of the TV or radio 24/7 isn't a great way to teach by the way. A lot of people think it is but Greys tend to tune it out like we do when the TV's on in the back ground. But when his owner talks to him, a Grey will be much more apt to imitate. It may take him time to get used to his new home but don't rush him. If he's an older bird, it may take more time. But when my grey was 6, he could only say a handful of words. Now he's about 12 and won't shut up haha.
read Parrot books you like to hear it repeat, play it different music, talk to Parrott about your aunt and tell him/her some stories. Maybe P. is traumatized or in mourning and missing your aunt.and needs time to get used to his new home and 'human companion'...
Of course keep it away from the boob tube if possible. Play P some intrumental versions of songs you like.Like any relationship, this will take time .
love your bird reguardless of whether he speaks or not
when you are training your Parrot, make sure you are reapeting the same thin over and over and over... until the parrot finally gets it. But remember, it takes time so be patient! I love parrots you are sooo lucky you have one!! good luck!
They live to be around 50 years old and they scream when you don't pay them attention. Get a parrot collar that shocks him when he makes a noise.

How can i get my dog to fly like a bird?

is there a way to get my dog to grow wings and fly so he could take me places?
Answers:
Feed him red bull! Red bull gives you wiiiiiiiings!
LOL
No, so don't throw him out the window.

You need a dragon, silly!
try to grow wings yourself. it works
do not even try it would take you a life time.
Yup. Get some of that weed they had in the movie 'Half Baked'. Remember how the dog flew? That'll do the trick...yea...
Sure.I have a flying boxer...I bread his mother with an eagle, knew I had to have something with a big wing span. He didn't fly till he was about 6 months old.but now he is able to take me anywhere I want to go. With the price of gas these days it was well worth the time and research. You will have to keep your weight in check though as they cannot handle you and alot of luggage. Good luck and bon voyage!!
a dog can not fly silly!

good luck!
Only if he is a bird dog. Any old mongrel won't do.
You can't - it is not natural for dogs to grow wings and fly. What you should do is ride your bike. And make sure you wear a helmet. In fact, you should proably be wearing a helmet all the time, just to be safe.
you can't dummy

EDIT: I want this asker to know that my 10 year old son answered this question while I was in the other room. I am leaving it, because I'd say the kid nailed it.

Thanks for a great laugh all the way around.
I dunno, man, but that is the most hilarious question I've ever read on this place! High 5 to you, Dude!

But seriously for a second, if we can genetically splice a house-plant to an African firefly to make a houseplant that glows in the dark, why can't we splice your dog to like, a really big bird or something, so he can fly? You might have to clone your dog, though. I think you gotta kinda start at the beginning.

Thanks for the laughs.
i know, get him to a plastic surgery and ask for wings and birdbrain.
Now that is the dumbest question I have seen here. And I am at level 5.
No.
Give the dog lots and lots of bird seed.If the dog don't grow wings it might quack like a duck
Ok here is how to make your dog fly like a bird:
Go up in a airolane for parachuting, attach a parachute to the dog and sling it out of the plane with you!

There you go, Your dog has now been flying!
Put him on the trampoline :)
My dog loves it!
hey your too Brock to afford an air plain ticket too
Easy. take a hallucinogen yourself, wait about 30 minutes and wallah..then your dog will fly... you car will talk... birds will deep sea dive. you'll be able to read minds and talk to trees... and deer will hunt humans!
are you American , i knew it you are so uninformed ,and silly what you have to get is a bugblatter beast of trawl who lives in a cave on beateljuice5 next to the planet eroticon6 the home of the famous triple breasted whore you can beam up there and buy one using the teleport but i don't advise it because i teleported home one night with Ron and Sid and Meg Rodney got Meggy's heart and i got Sydney's leg.
Umm.put him in an egg and wait for him to hatch? :)
Well, you are the pack leader, and in any leadership position, you have to show the subordinates that you would not ask them to do anything that you yourself are not willing to do. So...

Drink a bottle of Nyquil. Make sure you get the cherry flavor, it works best. Get on the roof of wherever you live and get a running start toward the edge. Right before you reach the edge, jump as high as you can while flapping your arms. Once your dog sees you do this, he will discover his own inner bird and will be more confident to fly on his own.

Or, you will break your legs and he will walk over and pee on you...
hgjklllllllllllllllllllll.
Wait for him to evolove.
use your magic wand, lmao or twitch your nose
attach 2 birds 2 either side

if big dog please use larger birds let me know if it works hahaha
For your dog - no. But for you ... you might try tapering off the recreational drugs.
i just want to say that i like the "red bull" answer.
I think you'd have better luck if he became a "dogfish". Swimming with the fishes is real easy to accomplish!

How can I catch a lovebird that is in my backyard?

ABout fifteen minutes ago, I saw a blue fischers lovebird in my tree. i actually thought it was my pet lovebird that i have in a cage outside. When I looked at the cage, my pet bird was still there. To lure the stray lovebird, I placed the cage close to the tree. The pet bird and the stray bird have been interacting between the cage wires.
How can I catch the stray bird? Should I let the stray bird become friends with my pet bird before I ty something?
Answers:
If you have a spare cage try placing the spare cage right next to the one where your lovebird.Put food and water in it.if you notice it goes in immediately close it and put up Ads that you have found a bird if no one responds within a month you can keep it.
Allowing your bird to interact with the other exposes it to potential diseases. If the bird is tame, it will come around when it gets to know you. You could try luring it with food to your hand or a cage if the bird is hungry, but if not, you might never get the little guy. If you really want to catch it, you could also try a net similar to that of a butterfly net.
you really shouldn't do that b/c 1 its against the law and 2.) if u were a bird that had freedom do u want to be locked up in a ccage?
Sorry but no. That bird may have diseases. And even know how hard you try if you do catch it, it will never be tame. It can also become aggressive, and may hurt your bird. I think you should let it go free.
umm if it is up in a tree you can of all things hose it down with the water hose it makes their feather heavy and cannot fly besides this i have not clue hope it helps
Put an empty cage next to your love bird's cage, put food and water in it, with the door open, and it may just go in. It's obviously been in a cage before. Or, if your bird's wings are clipped, maybe you could open your bird's door and let the new bird join it.
If you can, maybe rig a string to the open door so you can make it close from a distance, or fix it so the bird will pull a string that closes the door, so you don't have to go near the cage and maybe scare the bird out.
Then again, maybe you could move your bird's cage closer to the house, and the new bird will follow. Finally move it inside the house with the door open, and hope the new bird will follow, and you can shut the door and then catch the bird.
Technically you shouldn't let your bird be in contact with an unknown bird until you're sure it's healthy, but it probably is healthy, and anyway you already did. I've had a lot of pet birds and wild rescued birds, and my pets never caught anything.
Good luck!
If it landed on the cage try throwing a big blanket over the cage to trap the lovebird. You will have to sneak up to the cage and be very fast if you can.And if that don't work put another cage right beside your birds cage keep the door open and maybe you can hurry and close the door on him Good luck

How can I adopt/purchase a bird of prey?

Looking for a small to medium sized bird of prey indigenous to the southwest (NV) desert area. I live on the edge of the city on a mountain with miles of open land around me. I have a list of these birds %26 am a member of the the audubon society, however I don't where or how to adopt/purchase one? Prefer a hawk or perhaps a falcon..
Answers:
All birds of prey are federally protected. You might want to get ahold of your state dept. of Natural Resources Or the US Wildlife Dept or the Dept. of the Interior.
I'm not sure it would be allowed for you to have a bird of prey, but my thought is that the best way to find out would be to ask the wildlife officials in your area.

My guess is that you'd have to have special permission to have one.
Curious about this myself, im going to put some research into it as this will be my next pet.
call your local Department of Environmental Conservation, if you have one in your state . they will usually have the phone numbers for wildlife Rehabilitators, so might your local vet, may also be in the phone book out your way. Rehabilitators take care of many injured, and orphaned birds of pray, that are reported to police. i bet they will be able to tell you everything you need to do, and maybe have birds that need adopting.
You probably need to be licenced to own one of these birds. Not just anyone can have them as pets. I believe I heard once that you need to be a rehabilitator with a licence to have one.
They aren't pets and they need their flight time to stay healthy. They also have some pretty strict food needs. The license needs are also strict and vary a bit from state to state.

If you're serious about having a bird of prey, then I suggest that you contact a local falconer, ask to become an apprentice, and learn just what you need to do to get licensed to fly your bird.

The first link is one which will likely get you to someone in Nevada. The second is the North American Falconer's Association website and also some supplementary ones:

AND IT MOST DEFINITELY SUGGEST YOU READ this page at the N.A.F.A. site:
http://www.n-a-f-a.org/htm/aboutfal_main...
u need a bird liscense. try to get one from a wildlife preserve or something
Pigeonguy is right. You must obtain federal permits before owning a bird of prey. They are federally protected. The US Fish and Wildlife Service issues these permits. They are fairly strict on handing these out and you must meet certain requirements to obtain and keep the permit (renewed yearly). These birds not pets. You must be able to care for them appropriately.
These are wild birds and not meant to be pets. Only falconers who are licensed can own such birds. These birds are protected by law in the US...if you are an audobon member and love birds you should know better, that wild birds should be left in the wild. Get a pair of binoculars and enjoy watching wild birds this way.

How big do bobwhite quails get?

How big do they get? I'm hatching one in science class. I want to keep it, but I'm afraid I won't have enough room for it. I want to keep it in an old hermit crab tank. I can't upload a picture, but it is a pretty big tank and I believe it might be able to fit in there.
Answers:
Bobwhite quails get a little larger then the average dove.Though they require a great deal of more space.Quail are ground dwellers. So it is more important for a cage to have floor space rather then hight.Bobwhite quail can be released into the wild and naturally take care of them self. The only trouble with captive breed one's is they are less likely to identify a predator. For one quail you really need a cage that has at least 8 square feet of floor.Long and narrow is preferred over just being square. This allows the bird room to walk rather then pace.
It will fit in there, but they need more room than that to thrive. You might be able to keep it in something like a rabbit hutch, but they really do need a lot of room to roam. They're pretty birds, though.
what , like a 10 gal tank ? that's pretty small for a bobwhite quail . it will be dead in 2 months , you should set it free .
Just to reply to the answerer above me, DO NOT set it free, it needs to be properly cared for. If you set it free it will die a nasty death from one of several things:
1) Predators
2) Disease
3) Starvation
4) Hypothermia
5) Injury

None of those is a nice way to go.
That is not a good existence for anything larger then a hermit crab, fish, or gerbil... You are probably better off with an penned in habitat outside.

How are turkey as pets?

Are they similar to a chicken

I'm talking if a turkey was hatched in an incubater and raised in a house and held and petted alot, and when its bige enough lives outside in a pen

would it become as tame as a pet chicken, or will it retain some sort or aggression?
Answers:
When i was a kid I had two pet turkeys and they were almost like having a dog. They followed me to the bus stop every morning and when I got home would be waiting on me. I could call them and they would come running just like a dog would do. Only thing is that we didnt keep them in pens they just ran free outside, but we did live on a dirt road with few houses on it. Oh and they didnt like people with red hair for some reason.
it will have some aggression but overall not too much.
remember they have claws and spurs.
Delicious
I used to have two turkeys who I loved! They followed me everywhere. They loved me too. They did still get agressive when others came, especially little kids. Plus they poop whenever, in the house etc. I doubt you could train them not to. They're actually pretty dumb. I didn't incubate them though. I just bought them as little chicks. I loved mine.
Turkeys are stupid and never get over it. Plus when they poop...sheeesh what a mess. Chickens are friendlier and a little more intelligent. At least a chicken won't look in the sky and drown if it rains. Our turkeys always pecked at us, the chickens knew not to bite the hand that feeds them. Why would you want a Turkey as a "pet"? Parrots are much more affectionate.
In terms of affection, yes they are on the same scale as chickens. In general, the more you hold and stroke them and generally give them attention, the tamer they will be.

Turkeys aren't exactly known for their aggression.
not usually, turkey's are wild, like guinnea fowl, not very friendly. You could try to make friends with them very gradually, though. If you get turkeys you should put them in a pen outside, they are far too messy to be living inside, plus its cruel because it is not at all like their natural living environment. Also, you should get more than one turkey, they need a buddy so they don't die from lonesomeness.

How and what would you feed a crow hatchling?

The other day I asked about incubating crow eggs, now they are hatched. HELP
Answers:
You need to find a Wildlife Rehabber ASAP. Caring for a newly hatched baby is difficult (they will need to be fed every 10-15 Minutes, 12-14 hours a day) and can be fatal if you don't know what you are doing. Always keep the babies warm,if they begin to pant or you notice that their necks are stretched out and their mouths are open they are to warm Their temps should be 99-102 degrease Fahrenheit. Don't feed them anything until you contact a rehabber, they will be able to direct you on the proper way to go about feeding and what to feed. They may still have their yolk sacks.
i realy dont know. we fed our baby chickins scrambled eggs.dont know if that helps?
Once again JenE knows her stuff. If you had done your research in advance of this hatching, you would not be in a panic and the birds would not be at risk. Get thee to a rehabber.
you dont, you take them to a rehabber.

www.wildliferehabber.org

www.wildliferehabber.com

It would be illegal and unethical for someone on this forum to provide you with information on illegally raising federally protected birds. Do the right thing and turn the birds over to someone who knows how to care for them. Rehabilitators spend years training to raise animals. If people are more concerned about the animals than themselves they wouldn't be trying to selfishly raise them.

How can i help my cockatials come into breeding condition?

ive tryed all the potions and i use a glucose supplement in their water they are in an outside aviary with plenty of nest boxes and good seed and fruit
Answers:
Try removing the nest boxes for the winter and replace them in march/april. If they are available all the time, they might not get stimulated to breed.

Also: a lot depends on how safe they feel in their cage. If they are crowded or constantly stressed from something, they aren't going to breed.

Another thing is if they are bonded or not. If they aren't bonded, they aren't going to mate (well my male raped my female, but that is another story). They should be preening eachother, always sitting by eachother, etc.

Also: are you sure you have a male and a female? Get a DNA sexing done if they are anything but normal grays to be absolutely certain.
Get their sex double checked by DNA and also check the age of your cockatiel. They could be too young to breed. They need to be at least 12 months (preferably 24 months) before you breed them.

House sparrow nest under window ac unit.?

I pulled the unit out of window to move to another room. what should I do about the nest? It has 5 eggs in it.
Answers:
If you can, with gloves, place the nest with the five eggs back near the same area in the window. Maybe you can make a little box and attach it somehow to the window and place the nest inside. If it doesn't need to be moved, then just leave it alone, and hopefully the mother will come back.

If you touch the eggs, the mother Sparrow may not come back and sit on her eggs to hatch. Somehow they can smell the scent of human hands on the eggs.

If the mother does not come back, you can call a vet or talk to someone that works in a bird store that is knowledgeable, about the possibility of you taking over the nest.
I was thinking maybe you could place the nest with the eggs under a heat lamp and see if by some chance they hatch! Wouldn't that be something!

God bless you for caring enough about a Sparrow's nest. In this busy world, so many people lose touch with the smallest joys in nature.
leave it alone
if at all possible don't move it. if you must move it take care to keep from touching it with your bare hands. birds will sometimes abandon their nests if they smell human scent.
leave it. if it doesn't fall the parents will care for them.
if possible replace it as close as possible to where it originally was. Birds cannot smell your scent...most do not have a highly developed sense of smell so do not worry about them abandoning for this reason. They may abandon because of the disturbance...but you can at least try to put it back and see what happens.

Hi, i need to know if penguins can actually fly cause i thought i saw one the other day. thanks :)?

just to be sure!
Answers:
I want what your on
no they cannot fly...ever.
No they cannot fly. Check site.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/penguins...

Notice how it says FLIGHTLESS BIRD. you probably saw a large finch or something.
i can guarantee u that penguins cant fly.

ever seen happy feet?
No, none of the species of penguins are capable of flight. But, some of the species of cormorrants (especially the Pied) can look like a penguin.
You might feel kind of stupid for asking that question, but it's not really. It was actually pretty smart of you to ask because imagine if you went up to some one and said that you saw a penguin fly. The answer is no. Penguins can't fly.
ok not to be mean but wtf? dude hell no they cant fly
No they can't fly. there are over 50 species of penguins, all of which are flightless. they are adapted so that they could swim. their species is specifically for 'flightless birds.' Just look at their "wings"!
Just like everyone else has said, no they can't. There are some birds that resemble penguins in colour, such as certain cormorants.

HI!!! do aNY ONE haVE any idea ABOut the DAILy diet of a BABY sPARRow?

A baby sparrow had fallen down from it's nest in house ventillator , i think his one of the legs is injured .i have been giving it unsalted sev pieces, and water drops.can anyone pls tell me what should i give it to it. also what should i do about it's injured leg.pls..
Answers:
Contact rehab ASAP. Let them take care of the bird.
If he's chirping all the time, then he's hungry. Try to get rehab to pick up the baby as soon as possible, really.

If the poo is watery, it could be normal (birds do have watery poo) but if it's overly-so, then he's probably dehydrated. Give him water.
To feed a baby bird water, first get a paintbrush (the cheap plastic ones work fine) make sure there is NO paint on it, of course, and dip it in water. Coax the bird to open his mouth, and brush the paintbrush over the roof of his mouth. This way, he won't choke on the water or get it into his windpipe.

...If you think you really need to feed the bird... the best suggestion I know of for any age bird is soaked dog/cat mix well-blended/liquefied, with tiny amounts of egg yolk, yoghurt, other things with vitamins and etc in it. If you have it, try to feed it to the bird through a straw or blunt plastic syringe at 1/2 cc's. Baby birds need to be fed between ever 30 min to every 3 hours, depending on age and species. Of course, most people can't do this, so...again, take it to rehab ASAP.
Also, if the bird is really young and doesn't have his feathers grown in yet, he needs an incubator or a source of heat!

So please, TAKE IT TO REHAB.
why are you killing the pet
can you not get someone to put it back in the nest.if not a good pet store sells baby bird egg food you are looking for but in the wild they would eat flies etc so there must be a change on to another food for insect eaters, but its better in nest even with sore leg
you shouldn't be feeding it anything! the stomachs of baby birds can't tolerate a lot of stuff. find a wildlife rehabilitator close to you and take it to him or her. you shouldn't do anything but keep it warm and safe from everything.
wait for its mother
I would try to get it back into the nest first. If that is not possible and if it is injured the mother may reject it.
I raised 4 but you feed them dry dog food soaked in water. small pieces. I fed them with tweezers and wood skewer sticks with the food on the end. small pieces about the size of a pea until they get older
feed every 3 hours if it is a new born then you can gradually increase the time between feedings after it grows. Do not feed during the night.
make sure the food is soaked in water, and is soft as this is the only water it will get.
worm`s i guess i have no idea

Hi i got new chikies baby chikens that is?

well i barley got new chikens baby ones and i gave them the neccecary food and water warmness and all that and im afraid that theyll die and i need someone to tell me if or why theyr not cherping a lot is something wrong or theyr just tired i need help cuz first they churp and then they stop
Answers:
Baby chicks should be rather active.Especially during the day. They will take naps here and there but most of their day should be spent eating drinking and running around.Chickens are very social birds.Chicks peep for the same reasons the adult hens cluck and the roosters crow, that is to let everyone know where they are.If your chicks act lethargic then you may have a problem. If at all possible feed them non-medicated chick starter/grower Dumor makes an excellent one.Make sure the temp under the light is no higher then 85 degrees. As they begin getting feathers you can lower the temp by raising the light.Make sure they have feed and water available at all times.Their first 2 to 4 days of life they wont be highly active though this should change as the get stronger.By the time they are a week old they should be very active most of the day and quieter only at night. The big thing to look for as far as illness is one that loses strength wont stand or walk and keeps it's eyes closed.
They're content. I've been raising chickens my entire life ... they don't have to chirp non stop. They only chirp when they're busy or discontent. They are happy! Let them sleep and be quiet. Keep them on chick starter feed, keep them with fresh water, and make sure you have a lamp to keep them warm.
I've had chickens before, very small ones, chicks, if you want to call them that. I have realized that they do chirp and peep alot, so it sort of natural. Grown up chickens cluck alot when they walk around for no reason. They may be hungry, thirsty, tired, cold, hot, or playful. I hope you take care of them well. They really are little darlings when they give you the big-cow-eyes look. Good luck, and I hope this helped.
Well you need to buy Vitamins and Electryolytes from your local feed store it usually comes in a yellow bag or white bag. You just need to follow the directions on the back. This is what they need. Keep them on this for a couple of weeks and they should be fine and also you need medicated chick starter.

Hi can a woodpecker walk up a tree to peck at it or does it just fly?

my mate was out the other day and thought she saw woodpeckers walk up the tree and her fella said it flew but she swears it didn't flap its wings cheers everyone
Answers:
they can do both

woodpeckers have whats called zygodactyle feet it means 2 toes facing forwards and 2 toes facing backwards

their feet are pure muscle and that alows them to grip onto the bark and walk up it with ease, and with their keen vision they can fly and grip on the side of the tree with their feet.

it really is quite an amazing site to behold.

hope this helps

if you'd like to know more about woodpeckers or other birds you can email me at fatwhale90@yahoo.com
They do both. They also walk down and around. I too have seen a woodpecker on the ground just sort of hop on a tree and head right on up it.
They can walk up trees..and they can walk down ..I have seen them pecking upside down.
they can do three..hop,fly and walk..i live in a place where's a lot of woodpeckers..I've seen it every day..
Maybe it's scared of hights!
I agree with KarenW they do both.
i've only ever seen them fly!
they do both things: they walk up and down and they fly^_^
they do both. they have specially adapted feet that allow them to walk up and down trees searching for grubs and insects under the bark or in holes.

Hey its me again. thanks to every one who helped me with my question. just a few more?

i got rid of the one that was cracked but i live in an area where there is only a few pet stores. i asked every place i could if they had duck food they said no. i cant seem to find any place that has some. is there something i can make that will basically be ok for my ducks to live off of?? another thing... lets say i have three eggs that i know for sure will hatch. should i weight a few days after the 28th day if maybe one or two arnt hatched. or how long do i wait until i call it and know that they wont be coming out of there shell?? thank you all for your answers
Answers:
Where are you located? Try Southern States or Agri-Supply or try checking places that sell horse feed (may be easier to find) %26 they may not have it, but the can probably order it. Most cities have a farmer's market-you could go there %26 ask to see if anyone raises poultry or sells eggs %26 where they get their feed You can do the bread, but in the long run, it's not a good idea. Ducklings need lots of protein %26 something to "grind" to get their gizzards working (since they don't have teeth). You can also try chicken feed, which may be easier to come by, but make sure it's not medicated (ask-it may not be obviously written on the bag). Also try this link-it lists a number you can call for duck chow distributors in your area %26 they maybe able to help http://www.poultryconnection.com/quacker...

What breed of duck are they? Different breeds have different incubation times-I'd give it to ~36 days, then assume the embryos are dead. If they are, don't feel bad-incubation is not as easy as the hen makes it look! Try contacting your area's Cooperative Extension 4-H program (just google you're state's name %26 Cooperative Extension 4-H) if you'd like to try again. They have programs where you learn how to care for %26 successfully raise farm animals (from pigs to chickens to just about any farm animal). You might could get involved in that %26 try again!

If they do hatch, they'll need extra warmth for the first few weeks-check out this website for more information on early duck care http://www.extension.umn.edu/distributio...

Good luck!
Try a feed store. Young ducks usually eat the same food as laying hen chickens. It's usually called mash or laying mash.

The people at feed stores can provide you with a lot of information.
cut small pieces of bread and put in water. I used to feed my ducks this, and they loved it. I don't know the answer to your other question, sorry.
