How can I adopt/purchase a bird of prey?

Looking for a small to medium sized bird of prey indigenous to the southwest (NV) desert area. I live on the edge of the city on a mountain with miles of open land around me. I have a list of these birds %26 am a member of the the audubon society, however I don't where or how to adopt/purchase one? Prefer a hawk or perhaps a falcon..
Answers:
All birds of prey are federally protected. You might want to get ahold of your state dept. of Natural Resources Or the US Wildlife Dept or the Dept. of the Interior.
I'm not sure it would be allowed for you to have a bird of prey, but my thought is that the best way to find out would be to ask the wildlife officials in your area.

My guess is that you'd have to have special permission to have one.
Curious about this myself, im going to put some research into it as this will be my next pet.
call your local Department of Environmental Conservation, if you have one in your state . they will usually have the phone numbers for wildlife Rehabilitators, so might your local vet, may also be in the phone book out your way. Rehabilitators take care of many injured, and orphaned birds of pray, that are reported to police. i bet they will be able to tell you everything you need to do, and maybe have birds that need adopting.
You probably need to be licenced to own one of these birds. Not just anyone can have them as pets. I believe I heard once that you need to be a rehabilitator with a licence to have one.
They aren't pets and they need their flight time to stay healthy. They also have some pretty strict food needs. The license needs are also strict and vary a bit from state to state.

If you're serious about having a bird of prey, then I suggest that you contact a local falconer, ask to become an apprentice, and learn just what you need to do to get licensed to fly your bird.

The first link is one which will likely get you to someone in Nevada. The second is the North American Falconer's Association website and also some supplementary ones:

AND IT MOST DEFINITELY SUGGEST YOU READ this page at the N.A.F.A. site:

u need a bird liscense. try to get one from a wildlife preserve or something
Pigeonguy is right. You must obtain federal permits before owning a bird of prey. They are federally protected. The US Fish and Wildlife Service issues these permits. They are fairly strict on handing these out and you must meet certain requirements to obtain and keep the permit (renewed yearly). These birds not pets. You must be able to care for them appropriately.
These are wild birds and not meant to be pets. Only falconers who are licensed can own such birds. These birds are protected by law in the US...if you are an audobon member and love birds you should know better, that wild birds should be left in the wild. Get a pair of binoculars and enjoy watching wild birds this way.
