Hi can a woodpecker walk up a tree to peck at it or does it just fly?

my mate was out the other day and thought she saw woodpeckers walk up the tree and her fella said it flew but she swears it didn't flap its wings cheers everyone
Answers:
they can do both

woodpeckers have whats called zygodactyle feet it means 2 toes facing forwards and 2 toes facing backwards

their feet are pure muscle and that alows them to grip onto the bark and walk up it with ease, and with their keen vision they can fly and grip on the side of the tree with their feet.

it really is quite an amazing site to behold.

hope this helps

They do both. They also walk down and around. I too have seen a woodpecker on the ground just sort of hop on a tree and head right on up it.
They can walk up trees..and they can walk down ..I have seen them pecking upside down.
they can do three..hop,fly and walk..i live in a place where's a lot of woodpeckers..I've seen it every day..
Maybe it's scared of hights!
I agree with KarenW they do both.
i've only ever seen them fly!
they do both things: they walk up and down and they fly^_^
they do both. they have specially adapted feet that allow them to walk up and down trees searching for grubs and insects under the bark or in holes.
