My cockatiel is 1 year old and is able to pick things up with her talons (I guess that is what her feet are called...). She has even begun to pick sunflower seeds up out of her food bowl and eat them like macaws and other larger birds eat. While my cockatiel is able to do this, my friend's cockatiel, which is only a few months younger, is unable to pick anything up. I was just wondering if this is normal for Cockatiels.
Answers:
From what I've seen, it's like being left handed. Some cockatiels can do it, but in most cases it's not seen.
Yes, quite normal. Cockatiels have development stages just like we do.
We've had 6 Cockatiels and only one of them ever exhibited this behaviour, so I would say that it isn't very common for them to pick seeds up with their feet to eat like the bigger parrots do.
It's not uncommon, but birds do need practice at it, they aren't born naturals. Your cockatiel is more skilled at picking things up with its foot than your friend's cockatiel.
