I have two parakeets. I want to take them out of their cage, but I don't want them to fly around. I think it's best to clip them.

Mia, Please allow a professional to clip your birds first.
No it does not hurt the birds, NOR is it cruel to clip them, but i will say it keeps them under your control and keeps them out of trouble and flying into windows, and places they CAN get into trouble where you don't want them, like in a toilet, and other places.
Plus, it's a great way to play with your bird and inter react with them.
NEVER TURN YOUR BIRD UPSIDE DOWN! You can aspirate your bird (depending on the species) Some species it stops the heart from beating as in finches and canarys and it may cause your bird to bite, and distrust you.
Call around to some pet stores and ask if they do wing clipping, some charge a nominal fee of 5-10 dollars for clipping.
When going into their cage, always say "step up", it allows the bird(s) what you want them to do. It's not just a hand going in the cage and it don't surprise them either.
Good Luck!
Make sure you know what your doing.. but clipping wings is just like clipping hair. You just make sure you clip before the veins .. get a professional to do this or read eveything you can before attempting.
mm.. im not sure but i dont think so cuz if it was it would probaly be like a law not to do it cuz that would b realy curel if it hurt!
It shouldn't hurt them but I would recommend taking it to the vet %26 let them do it they would know the proper way to do good luck
DO NOT CLIP THEIR WINGS HOW WOULD YOU FELL IF SOMEONE CUT OFF YOUR ARMS JUST PULL A FEW TAIL FEATHERS.
No, it shouldn't hurt at all unless you slip with the clippers and get yourself or the bird pecks at you.
No.not at all..just make sure you know how to do it. I would recomend to take them with someone who knows how to clip. You dont want to overcut !
I suggest you take them to a local pet store and let them cut it for you. Don't do it yourself because you might cut the wrong spots. Good luck
no. it is not painful when done right *of course*
it's just a psychological trip *bad trip* for the bird.
just handle your bird and play often with it
flip it on its back till it is comfortable and talk to it. when you or someone else clips the birds....then you can talk to it...and it will know that it does not have to react as if it IS painful.
for NAILS??? watch out for the veins/bloodsource of the nail. you can see it on white nails. but.rule of thumb is that you clip the tips and not much further where the nail is much wider. BEST things??? play with the claws and handle the bird daily or throughout the day and a lot before you clip the nails. THEN when comfortable. FILE THE NAILS with a small ***pinkish FINE file** its safer for you and them. but if you have to clips a lot of nail *then clip away*
oh and invest on a sand or partially sand covered post ((helps with nails getting too sharp of too long)))
Don't be afraid to have the parakeets fly around your place. We have done that all the time, and I now plan to do tha twith my lovebirds. All you have to do is turn off any ceiling fans, close all the blinds or cover windows quickly and easily with something, and throw a blanket or sheet over any mirrors. Pick a room where it's easy to do that, and then enjoy them flying around. Ours were never very tame, and it was fun to watch them fly and have a blast, and then they would easily jump back on our fingers to go back into their cages. I mean, if you clip the birds' wings, then what is the point of letting htem out of the cage -- they can't fly anyway, so they may as well be cooped up. Trust me, you will have a lot more enjoyment of your pet, and they will be happier, if you don't clip their wings. I have never had one escape or get hurt or that was hard to collect back. And if you take time to tame them, they will sit on your finger, ours would do that, even though they liked to fly. I have known many people who's birds will sit on their fingers and their feathers have not been clipped, that is a sign you took the time to get to know them, not that you are mutalating them and forcing them to stick to your finger cause they can't fly (they also can fall and get hurt) These are birds, so don't be cruel and cut off their flying just to make yourself happy. There are other pets that don't fly that you can get. If you are a true bird lover and care about your babies, which it sounds like you do, then don't clip them:) (the feathers don't grow back)
no it doesnt hurt them, sometimes when i get my african greys toe nails clipped they bleed, but i dnt think it hurts them.
