Please look at the sites below on the canaries. I had parrot who died 2 years back. Never had canaries. Best of Luck .

** NEVER DO WING CLIPPINGS OF THE PET BIRDS. WINGS BALANCE THE BIRDS AND IT IS IMPORTANT FOR THEIR SELF DEFENCE. WITHOUT WINGS THEY WILL BE TAKEN BY THE FORCE OF AIR. BIRDS LOVE SPREADING THEIR WINGS ESPECIALLY DURING TAKING SHOWERS OR TAKING BATH FROM THE WATER BOWL. THIS IS A DELIGHT TO WATCH THEM. WING CLIPPINGS IS LIKE CUTTING THE HANDS OF THE HUMAN BEINGS. Iam passing this information to all the pet birds lovers. **
If they sing they are both males, and to my surprise if they are caged together that they both sing! Ususally canaries and only the males sing, when together most of the time do not sing unless they are seperated. Canaries are like your finches just feed them and love them and enjoy them!
I have a canary %26 I really enjoy him. I've found a lot of great information by joining a canary Yahoo group. There are tons to choose from mostly based on the type of canary you own.

I have 3 Canaries at the moment which are caged in the house - all males (two red factors and one Gloster in seperate cages) and all are singing like mad at the moment. The males will sing when kept together, they only usually cease or slow down on their singing when a male and female are kept together (afterall the males voice is what he uses to attract females so if one is present he doesn't need to use it as much). They will also stop singing usually for a few weeks when they are in moult. Females will sometimes have a little go at singing, but it's no where near as complex or vibrant as the males are. The only thing you will have to watch is that males can become aggressive towards each other and start to fight, particularly when caged rather than in an aviary. It may be that you'll eventually have to split them up and perhaps get two females to keep them company.
If you've kept Society/Bengalese and Zebra finches then you already know the basics of bird care. The Canaries aren't too difficult to cater for - they love bathing so a bath for them should be present. They should be fed on a food aimed at Canaries (I normally give mine mixed canary which has a variety of small seeds and egg food), and they also love a variety of vegs and fruits added to their diet everyday. I also add a bowl of grit in the cage which is always available to them.
